Louisiana Annuity Information
Louisiana Department of Insurance
The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) works diligently to balance the needs of insurance consumers with the insurance industry’s need to run a competitive business. As a regulator, the LDI enforces the laws that provide a fair and stable marketplace with transparent rules so one insurer does not have an unfair competitive advantage over other insurers. The LDI also works to make certain that insurers comply with all the laws in place to protect policyholders.
Louisiana is part of the U.S. insurance regulatory framework which is a highly coordinated state-based national system designed to protect policyholders and to serve the greater public interest through the effective regulation of the U.S. insurance marketplace. Through the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), U.S. insurance regulators establish national standards and best practices, conduct peer reviews and coordinate their regulatory oversight to better protect the interests of consumers while ensuring a strong, viable insurance marketplace.
Prior to becoming Commissioner of Insurance, Jim Donelon served the Louisiana Department of Insurance in leadership positions as Chief Deputy Commissioner and Executive Counsel.
Jim is a native New Orleanian, graduate of Jesuit High School, the University of New Orleans and Loyola School of Law.
Jim served as the President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) in 2013 and serves as Chairman of the Surplus Lines Task Force. He is also on the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in New Orleans and the Blood Center for Southeast Louisiana.
The Office of Consumer Advocacy of the Department of Insurance handles inquiries and complaints filed by consumers. It also prepares and distributes information to educate and help consumers and provides assistance for those who request advocacy services. It also ensures that all insurance and annuity companies are in compliance with the policyholder bill of rights.
