Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs

The Insurance Division of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs oversees the insurance industry as it relates to the state of Hawaii. It regulates all of the insurance companies and agents that do business within the state. It is comprised of seven separate branches: The Financial Surveillance and Examination Branch, the Compliance and Enforcement Branch, the Licensing Branch, the Rate and Policy Analysis Branch, the Captive Insurance Branch, the Insurance Fraud Investigation Branch and the Health Insurance Branch.

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs will be monitoring a variety of issues this year including electricity rates, and its impact on Hawaii's consumers and businesses.

Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs

Catherine Awakuni Colon is the director of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Before that, she was the cable administrator for the department's Cable Television Division and the executive director for its Division of Consumer Advocacy. She was the chief legal counsel and commission counsel for the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission. She has bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii and a law degree from the university's William S. Richardson School of Law.
