The Georgia Office of Insurance mission is to have a well-trained workforce, utilizing state of the art technology to facilitate regulation, coordination and uniformity among state regulators and provide public access to services and fire safety information that results in a consumer friendly and competitive market place.
The Insurance Financial Oversight Section of the Insurance Department is responsible for the licensing of companies desiring to transact business in Georgia.
Companies are licensed by issuing a Certificate of Authority to transact insurance business in the state. These certificates must also be renewed annually. The section also approves or disapproves petitions filed with the Secretary of State for insurance companies who want to be incorporated in Georgia, known as domestic insurers.
Ralph Hudgens was elected as Georgia’s Insurance Commissioner on November 2, 2010. In addition to being Insurance Commissioner, Hudgens is also the Safety Fire Commissioner and Industrial Loan Commissioner. His duties include regulating approximately 1,600 insurance companies, licensing 137,000 insurance agents, and regulating over 1,000 industrial loan offices.
As Safety Fire Commissioner, Hudgens appoints the State Fire Marshal, oversees the state arson unit, regulates explosive and hazardous materials, and is responsible for the inspection of public buildings for compliance with the state fire code. Commissioner Hudgens is a businessman , who for nearly two decades, worked for Shell Chemical Company, a division of Shell Oil, in sales and management. Today, he owns and operates several successful businesses, and understands first-hand how insurance premiums impact companies of all sizes.
The Consumer Services Division is the investigative arm of the Department of Insurance and attempts to ensure fair and equitable dealings between insurers, agents, and policyholders regarding all insurance transactions.
