The State of Tenness (TN) Department of Commerce and Insurance - Securities Division
The Insurance Division is tasked with protecting consumers and ensuring a viable insurance marketplace in the State. This Division regulates and licenses both individuals and corporations, assesses suspicions of fraud, and provides resources to compare various insurance providers for citizens of Tennessee.
The mission of the Tennessee Securities Division is to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities markets in Tennessee. The Securities Division regulates the securities industry and the securities products (offerings) that are sold in the state of Tennessee.
In addition to regulation, they are responsible for monitor industry activities to ensure fair dealing with investors and compliance with business conduct rules, enforce the Tennessee Securities Act of 1980, Tennessee Code Annotated Section 48-1-101, et seq., and educate the investing public.
Julie Mix McPeak was appointed Commissioner in January 2011. Before being named to lead the department, she practiced as Counsel to the Insurance practice group of law firm Burr & Forman LLP.
She also served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Insurance (KOI). Before her appointment as Executive Director, McPeak spent nine years as an attorney for KOI, the final five as general counsel. She also served as general counsel to the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet. McPeak , who brings more than 20 years of legal and administrative experience in state government, is the first woman to serve as chief insurance regulator in more than one state.
Tennessee (TN) Annuity Resources: The Tennessee Securities Division is responsible for enforcing the Tennessee Securities Act of 1980 and protecting the investors of Tennessee by maintaining the integrity of the securities market. We accomplish this function through the regulation of the securities industry and capital markets of Tennessee. The Division also advocates investor education in the prevention of fraud. Through investor education, citizens can avoid bogus securities scams and keep Tennessee's capital markets viable.
